When should you replace your brake pads?

You should replace your brake pads when they have worn down to a certain thickness, typically specified by the manufacturer. However, several signs indicate it's time to replace your brake pads:

• Squealing or Squeaking Noise: Brake pads are often equipped with wear indicators, which are small metal tabs that make contact with the rotor when the pads are worn down. When you hear a high-pitched squealing or squeaking noise while braking, it's likely that the wear indicators are rubbing against the rotor, indicating that the brake pads need replacement.
• Grinding Noise: If you hear a grinding or metal-on-metal noise when applying the brakes, it means that the brake pads have worn down completely, and the metal backing of the pads is making direct contact with the rotor. Continuing to drive with worn-out brake pads can cause damage to the rotor and other brake parts.
• Reduced Braking Performance: Worn brake pads may result in reduced braking performance, longer stopping distances, or a mushy brake pedal feel. If you notice any changes in the way your brakes respond, it's essential to have them checked promptly.
• Visual Checkup: You can visually check your brake pads through the wheels or by removing the wheels if necessary. If the brake pads appear thin, or worn unevenly, or if there is less than 1/4 inch of pad material remaining, they should be replaced
• Dashboard Warning Light: Some vehicles are equipped with a dashboard warning light that indicates when the brake pads are worn down. If this warning light illuminates, it's important to have your brake pads checked and replaced as needed.
